Hairline Damage

Hair loss around the hairline seems to be on trend these days.  Its especially frustrating to have a thinning hairline when the rest of your hair is flourishing.  Well ladies, there may be hope to regrow your hairline (depending on the severity of the loss).

Discover - Find out why your hair is thinning.  Do you have a medical condition? Have you recently had a hormonal change i.e. having a baby? Is your damage due to traction alopecia?  Traction alopecia is a form of alopecia, or gradual hair loss, caused by repetitive or persistent pulling or force on hair roots.  This occurs when braids, ponytail, or weaves are worn too tight near the hairline.  Most of the styles used by African American women involve chronic traction.

Can this problem be fixed? Perhaps.  Depending on the amount of damage that has been caused to the hair follicle, you may need to seek the help of a dermatologist.  For ladies that have not reached this level of damage there is hope.  Immediately stop all negative hair practices!!!!

There are a few practices to avoid

  • tight ponytails and braids
  • overuse of weaves and wigs. Countess Vaughn was on The Doctors last month detailing her experience with lace fronts wigs. Countess Vaughn Video
  • harsh chemicals
  • rough brushing around the hairline
Remedy - Please understand there are no guarantees on any treatment.  Your ability to regrow hair depends on how severe the damage.  Some tips to help avoid hairline damage include low manipulation styling, applying moisture to the hairline, and using a silk/satin pillowcase at night.  Also giving your hair a break from wigs, weaves, and braids is essential as well.  Too much of anything is bad for you, right?  A few of the natural hair forums list the following products that many have tried to stimulate hair growth around the hairline.
  • Castor Oil
  • Rosemary Oil
  • Peppermint Oil
  • Sulfur 8
  • Vitamin E
  • Coconut Oil
The hairline is very delicate and we have to be careful how we care for it.  Personally, my hairline began to thin after I had my babies.  Postpartum shedding is the devil.  I haven't tried any of the above methods but I'm considering the peppermint oil.  Have you tried any methods to help your hairline?  Let me know.

XOXO,
Lisa
